eng Ecotoxicity of nanomaterials to soil organisms – optimization of agar-based exposure media composition It has long been known that results of toxicity studies tend to be significantly affected by the behavior of nanomaterials in exposure media. Therefore, effort of our work was focused on development of testing procedure applicable in common laboratory practice providing data, which are not distorted due to this phenomena. Use of agar instead of soil provides an advantage, especially when it comes to analysis/characterization of nanoparticle in the exposure media, reducing agglomeration and exclusion interactions with soil constituents in order to focus on the impact of nanoparticles. In our study we tested ecotoxicity of zinc oxide nanoparticles (mean particle size diameter 10 nm) to the annelid Enchytraeus crypticus in pure and modified agar. We used and compare four different environments and studied the influence of the components to the properties and ecotoxicity of nanoparticles. The results clearly showed that the soil constituents in modified agar, namely kaolin a humic acids or their mixture, influenced the behavior and resulting ecotoxicity of nanoparticles.
