eng SYNTHESIS OF STAR POLYMERS APPLICABLE AS FILLERS FOR POLYURETHANE COATINGS Star polymers were prepared by ionic polymerization in block. Polyols, e.g., butane-1,4-diol, trimethylol propane (TMP), pentaerythrithol (PETP), and dipentaerythrithol (DPETP), served as the star core, and the star arms were built from ε-caprolactame, lactide and di-ester of lactic acid in different ratios of both components. Some of the basic star polymers were further reacted with glycidol and oxetan in order to synthesize hyperbranched polymers. The reaction kinetics was followed by size exclusion chromatography (SEC). The yield of all syntheses was about 99.5%. The final products had viscosity of 2840 – 5820 mPa.s and some of the stars were able to crystallize at laboratory temperature. The prepared star polymers were characterized by SEC and asymmetric field flow field fractionation (A4F) coupled with a multi-angle light scattering (MALS). The star and hyperbranched polymers were then combined with butane-1,4-diol and crosslinked by means of isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI). The crosslinked films were evaluated by tests widely used in paint industry, e.g., pendulum hardness or specular gloss. It was found that the coatings based on TMP have often anti-slip properties, high gloss, but lower hardness. These coatings are prospectively useable for showers, pools etc. On the contrary, coatings based on PETP and DPETP have high hardness, but no antislip properties. Similar improving of properties as the films with PETP and DPETP show the films containing the hyberbranched polymers. Ionic polymerization; Polyurethane Coatings; A4F-MALS
