eng Autotrophic Denitrification Using Bacteria Thiobacillus denitrificans and Elemental Sulfur in Flow-through System Nitrate and nitrite are serious problem in waters and autotrophic denitrification using bacteria Thiobacillus denitrificans can be an alternative method of nitrate and nitrite removal from contaminated water. T. denitrificans belongs to a group of chemolithoautotrophic, facultative anaerobic, non-pathogenic and non-toxic microorganisms. It uses energy from the oxidation of reduced inorganic sulfur compounds while electrons are released and used for reduction nitrate and nitrite ions under anoxic conditions. In this work, the elemental sulfur was used as electron donor for bacterial cells T. denitrificans. The aim of the work was to describe autotrophic denitrification using T. denitrificans and remove undesirable low concentrations of nitrate, which cannot be removed by other method of nitrate removal.
