eng Analysis of minor substances in isoindoline yellow pigment P.Y. 139 Isoindoline and isoindolonene pigments represent quite new group of pigments, first of them were introduced in the mid-1960s. Depending in their structure, isoindoline pigments afford yellow, orange, red and brown shades. P.Y. 139 is a reddish yellow pigment, used in plastics, paints and printing inks. The commercial types exhibit a wide variety of particle size distributions and accordingly demonstrate very different coloristic properties depending not only on the production technology (drying, conditioning, etc.) but also on occurence of residual reaction intermediates. In this work, three samples of P.Y. 139 were analyzed and potential impurities derived from the reaction scheme were monitored. All three samples of pigment are technological samples and their analysis results will be served to tune the manufacturing process. Barbituric acid, phthalic acid, phthalodinitrile and phthalimide were identified as potential impurities and were monitored in analyzed samples. New impurity, bibarbituric acid, was identified. This compound coelutes with barbituric acid in RP-LC system, so HILIC had to be employed. Pigments, P.Y. 139, barbituric acid
