The aim of this study was to determinate the antimicrobial susceptibility of Mycoplasma hominis and Ureaplasma urealyticum isolates obtained from women and men with symptoms of urogenital infection using broth microdilution method. The antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed in PPLO broth supplemented with horse serum, yeast extract, substrate (arginine/urea) and indicator phenol red. Inoculated microplates were incubated at 37°C in an atmosphere containing 5-10% carbon dioxide. Ureaplasma urealyticum was examined after incubation of 16-18 hours, Mycoplasma hominis after 24 hours. The susceptibility to azithromycin, erythromycin, ciprofloxacin, doxycycline, josamycin, norfloxacin and levofloxacin in concentration range 0.0635-32 mg/l was determined. A total of 45 Mycoplasma hominis and 19 Ureaplasma urealyticum strains were tested. In our study, doxycycline and josamycin were the most effective antimicrobial agents against all tested strains. On the contrary, all strains of Mycoplasma hominis were resistant to erythromycin and azithromycin. The least active antibiotic against Ureaplasma urealyticum was found to be ciprofloxacin. M. hominis and U. urealyticum are commonly present in urogenital infections in both men and women. The right choice of antibiotic is important to eradicate mycoplasmal infection and to prevent the risk of future infertility. As the antimicrobial resistance among urogenital mycoplasmas is increasing, susceptibility testing of individual isolates appears to be necessary.
