eng Analysis of Optical Brightening Agents using Hydrophilic Interaction Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry Optical brightening agents (OBA) used in the paper industry are polyaromatic highly sulfated compounds, typically diaminostillbene di- to hexa-sulfonic acid derivatives, which can be excited by radiation in UV range yielding fluorescent emission in blue-to-violet light. The compounds, which are used in production of brightened copy papers and other paper products, are in many countries prohibited as additives in food-contact paper. Due to the persistency of the compounds, the OBA can however migrate into the food-contact paper products from recycled paper, as the recycling rate of the paper is very high (e.g. 72.5% in European Union in 2016 according to The European Paper Recycling Council). The diaminostillbene-based sulfonic acids are non-volatile strongly polar compounds with very low retention in reversed-phase liquid chromatography. In present work we have investigated the possibilities of separation of four OBA derivatives using hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography, in which the sulfonic acids are strongly retained in the water-rich layer adsorbed on the surface of polar stationary phase. We have compared three column types, i.e. bare silica gel stationary phase, amide-type and highly polar pentahydroxyl-based stationary phase. The optimized HILIC separation was coupled with tandem mass spectrometry and the fragmentation behavior of the compounds was described as well. Based on the achieved results, we have applied the developed method on the analysis of infusions of food-contact paper products, immersed for 24 hours in distilled water.
