eng Polyurethane Coatings Based on Star Polymers Prepared by Ionic Polymerization This work is focused on the preparation of star polymers by ionic polymerization. Star polymers with different arm numbers were prepared from different ratio of arm forming chemicals. Trimethylol propane, pentaerythritol and dipentaerythrythol were used as core forming chemicals. Ɛ-caprolactame and lactic acid were used for arm forming with different ratio of both. The yield of all syntheses was about 99 %. The prepared polymers were characterized by size exclusion chromatography coupled with static multi angle light scattering (SEC-MALS). The prepared stars were then combined with aliphatic diol (linear polyol was prepared by group transfer polymerization, and grafted by Ɛ-caprolactame and isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI). The crosslinked films were evaluated by tests widely used in paint industry, e.g. pendulum hardness, specular gloss, microhardness, determination of stone-chip resistance of coatings. Films were tested by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) in order to determine glass transmission (Tg). Selected coatings were tested also by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) for investigation of mechanical properties. We found an increase in hardness with increasing amount of aliphatic diol in the all prepared coatings. This effect we attribute to decreasing amount of star polymer, which acts as a plasticizer. The coating has high gloss, good resistance against methyl ethyl ketone (MEK test). In comparison with star molecules the coating based on clear cured graft polyol has greater better stone-chip resistance and resistance against abrasion and higher gloss. Tg increases, with increasing amount of polyol in the coating. Stars in the coatings have plasticizing properties. This coating based on pure polyol will be further formulated for e.g. in aircraft industry, automotive industry. polyurethane coating; SEC-MALS; star polymers
