eng Preparation of biodegradable latexes containing covalently linked glucose derivative This paper deals with the synthesis and application of a glucose-based derivative. The synthesis of 1-O-allyl-D-glucopyranoside (PG) was performed by glycosidation of D-glucose and allyl alcohol catalyzed with boron trifluoride etherate under anhydrous conditions.1 After the purification, the 1-O-allyl-D-glucopyranoside can be used for the preparation of latexes by the emulsion polymerization technique of vinyl monomers. This glycoside derivative was incorporated emulsion polymers via the reactive allyl group. Vinyl acetate (VAc), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and GP were used as main components for the preparation of a biologically degradable polymeric material. Polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) created during the reaction was subjected to alkaline hydrolysis during the polymerization process leading to the formation of vinyl alcohol units. Testing of biodegradation was mainly focused on watery systems, therefore degradability testing was performed by BOD5 cuvette tests.2 It was confirmed that a fully degradable copolymer with GP was prepared. Moreover, it was found that latexes containing GP exhibited sufficient storage stability, neutral pH and low viscosity suitable for coatings application. Their coatings exhibited transparency, water solubility and biodegradability. These latexes are potentially applicable in the field of sustained release fertilizer encapsulation3 or as an ecological paper glue4 with a subsequent low biological disposal. : biodegradable latex; emulsion polymerization; 1-O-allyl-D-glucopyranoside
