eng Enhancement of Ultrafiltration of Cutting Oil Wastewater by Twisted Tapes as Turbulence Promoters In this paper, we present the application of twisted tapes as turbulence promoters for the enhancement of the ultrafiltration of the cutting oil wastewater. The aim of this paper is to present the optimal twisted tape dimension alongside the working conditions for the enhanced ultrafiltration process. The central composite face-centred design (CCFD) was chosen as an experimental plan with transmembrane pressure, cross-flow rate, the aspect ratio of twisted tape and concentration of the oil as factors. Using the response surface methodology (RSM) the flux and specific energy consumption, as responses, were modelled by the second order polynomial equation. The process was optimized using a desirability function with the aim to maximize the flux and minimize the specific energy consumption. The fluxes obtained by the application of twisted tapes are remarkably higher, two to three times. The RSM methodology was successful in predicting of both responses with the determination coefficient, as high as 0.98 and 0.95, for the flux and the specific energy consumption, respectively. The linear effects of the cross-flow rate and the aspect ratio have a dominant positive influence on the flux. The linear effect of cross-flow rate has a positive dominant effect on the specific energy consumption. The squared effect of the aspect ratio is statistically significant and allows optimization. The optimal flux of 201 L m-2 h-1 can be obtained consuming 1.34 kWh m-3 under the concentration of 2% (w/w), TMP 150 kPa, cross-flow rate 3.7 L min-1, and the aspect ratio of twisted tape of 1.55. twisted tape; wastewater, fouling minimization, membrane filtration, response surface methodology; optimization;
