eng WATER-BORNE ALKYD RESINS CURED WITH COMMERCIAL DRIERS AND VANADYL COMPLEXES Water-borne alkyd resins are preeminent binders in paint industry due to increasing requirements for environmental protection and human safety. As an ecological paint alternative formed coatings obtained from aqueous formulations are competitive with coatings from organic-soluble systems for almost all applications. Currently, waterborne alkyd resins, along with water dispersions, are widely used in construction (painting of facades and interiors), repair painting of metal building structures, when priming metal by means of electrodeposition and autodeposition, painting metal and wooden furniture, rolled metal, packaging, plastics, canning packaging and much more. Autoxidation process involves physical and chemical drying. During physical phase the solvents are evaporated and polymer chains are approaching. Chemical curing proceeds through radical mechanism and cross-linked 3-dimensional network is formed. In industry, the most widely used is cobalt 2-ethylhexanoate, which was found to be toxic and genotoxic carcinogen. For this reason, nontoxic alternatives with the same catalytic activity as the cobalt are sought. Nowadays, the driers able to replace cobalt(II) based on iron (e.g., cyclopentadienyl or bispidone complexes) and manganese (e.g., bipyridine or triazacyclononane complexes) have been already studied. In our study the curing of water based formulation (NEBORES® FP 262-55 W) by commercial driers (Borchers® Deca Cobalt 7 aqua, Octa-soligen® 421 Aqua, Borchi® OXY-Coat 1101) have been studied in compare to new synthetized vanadyl complexes.
