eng The influence of copper on zinc-metaphosphate glasses The aim of this work is to investigate the physico-chemical properties of the phosphate glasses containing transition metals. In our case, copper was used among other due to its antibacterial effect. The second electropositive part, Zn could increase the bioactivity. Ten glasses from compositional line xCuO-(50-x)ZnO-50P2O5, i.e. a compositional series with continuous replacement of Zn(PO3)2 for Cu(PO3)2, were prepared. The structure of the glass-forming part, the phosphate network, was studied using Raman spectroscopy, which confirmed the expected presence of only Q2, i.e. metaphosphate structural units. Spectra also indicate that metal cations interact with non-bridging oxygens only. All the copper-containing glasses were colored and the color was changing from brightly blue-green to dark green depending on the Cu2+ content. The color is caused by d-d transitions (d9 system). Using EPR, it was verified that copper is present in all glasses as a Cu2+ ion and also showed that the surrounding of this ion is axially symmetric, Owing to the fact of bonding interaction of metal cations with only non-bridging oxygens, as mentioned above, the surrounding of copper can be described as a square. copper phosphate glasses; Raman spektra; 31P MAS NMR; physico-chemical properties
