eng Water matrix limitations for removal of reactive azo dye from dyeing wastewaters using photocatalytic process The objective of this study was to demonstrate the advantages/disadvantages of reactive azo dye photocatalytic degradation in several complex matrices of simulated wastewater. A suspension photoreactor was equipped with TiO2 catalyst and irradiated using a low energy UV-A LED source. The inorganic ions present in the treated systems affected dye adsorption, caused colloidal instability and acted as a hydroxyl radical scavenger. The wastewater decolorization was a significantly faster process in comparison with the decrease in total organic carbon content in the reaction mixture. This indicates that total mineralization is a gradual, longer-term process and that the original dye is degraded through several degradation byproducts. The mineralization time was further significantly prolonged in the presence of organic nitrogen substances.
