eng A Tool for Short RNA Isolation The focuse of presentation is miRNA isolation, because there is currently a lot of attention aimed at those molecules, thanks to the connection of their expression levels with various diseases and pathological processes, mainly in cancer research. Very often, the commercial kits and methods for isolation of miRNA use hazardous chemicals such as phenol and chloroform. That is the main reason why we wanted to try to develop new method of miRNA isolation from cells that would be safer to perform and that would be possibly more affordable as well. We tested two different materials based on titanium dioxide - microspheres and nanotubes. We proved, that both materials are capable of RNA isolation. When used in right conditions, the microspheres managed to selectively separate short RNAs from long RNAs, which implies, that microspheres are more selective towards short RNAs than long RNAs. In comparison, nanotubes managed to extract practically all of RNA molecules from initial sample. We optimized conditons for miRNA extraction from mixture of RNAs with different sizes. miRNA extraction; TiO2; RNA
