eng The immunoreactivity and cytotoxicity study of SiO2 nanofibers Macrophages play a significant role in immune surveillance and defense against external danger signals. These immunocompetent cells provide a functional link between innate and specific immunity. With the increasing interest in nanotechnology and the massive usage of nanomaterials in everyday activities, the effect of nanomaterials on the human body and mainly on the immune system has to be proved and studied in detail. In the case of nanomaterials industrial production and distribution, the immunoreactivity or/and immunotoxicity becomes one of the required characteristics. Nanomaterials have the potential to evoke severe inflammation, allergic reaction, or adverse immunostimulation in the human body. In case of accidental or therapeutic body exposure to nanomaterials, macrophages are in charge of their recognition, uptake, processing, and clearance. In our work, we tested the ability of SiO2 nanofibers to elicit a proinflammatory effect in THP-1 derived macrophages. nanofibers; immunoreactivity; immunotoxicity
