A relatively new and rapidly developing class of porous materials suitable for adsorption-based applications are the so-called metal organic frameworks (MOFs). These materials possess a very wide range of both chemical and physical properties making them potentially useful for a wide array of adsorption processes. One of these interesting features is the ability of some MOFs to change their framework parameters under different conditions (breathing of the framework). This mechanism can be exploited in gas separation processes. In this work, hydrogen-bonded 1D MOF chains self-assembled into 3D porous structures were studied. These materials exhibit extremely high flexibility and variability of pore size controlled by conditions and adsorptive loading. Aim of this study was to shed light on how it affects adsorption properties of these materials, in particular when it comes to adsorption of light hydrocarbons. It was found that at ambient conditions and low pressure (<10 torr) the studied material was able to preferentially adsorb linear C4 and C5 hydrocarbons over branched C4 and C5 hydrocarbons with a very high selectivity.
