eng Structural modification of the viologen parental scaffold towards new potential electrolytes for aqueous redox flow batteries A redox flow battery (RFB) is a modern technological device enabling large-capacity storage of electrical energy, typically generated from renewable energy sources. Due to the current interest in aqueous RFB technologies, the development of new electrochemically active materials improving the maximum efficiency, capacity and stability of the battery is highly desirable. From this point of view, organic redox active compounds play a key role due to the facile tuning of their electrochemical properties and solubility though the structural modification of parental (hetero)aromatics scaffolds. Among others, viologens (bipyridinium salts) are prominent anolyte materials possessing extraordinary electrochemical properties and high solubility in water. In recent years, we focused our attention on structural modification of the parental viologen scaffold to further improve the electrochemical behaviour and solubility of viologen analogues in aqueous electrolytes. The incorporation of additional (hetero)aromatic unit between two bipyridinium rings is one possible concept of the desired structural optimalization. This research helps to understand how the performed structural modifications affect the reversibility and redox potential of the observed electrochemical processes, the chemical stability and solubility of the generated reduced forms, as well as the long-term stability of particular viologen derivatives in an aqueous electrolyte. redox flow battery; viologen; electrochemistry
