eng APPLICATION OF COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE NANOFILTRATION MEMBRANES FOR METFORMIN AND ATENOLOL SEPARATION Considering the complex chemical nature of pharmaceutical compound and the difficulty in its separation process, this research work aims at investigating the performance of two commercially available thin‒film composite polyamide nanofiltration (NF) membranes (AFC 40 and AFC 80) for separating active pharmaceutical drugs, namely Atenolol (MW = 266.341 g·mol−1) and Metformin (MW = 129.167 g·mol−1) from wastewater. The measurements of water permeability and rejection of aqueous solutions of organic and neutral solutes were used to estimate the structural parameters of NF membranes. The influence of various operating conditions on the rejection of the solutes by the NF membranes was studied and that includes transmembrane pressure, cross flow velocity, and the effect of composition feed solution on AFC 40 and AFC 80. It was observed that the rejection of the pharmaceutical compounds was directly proportional to the transmembrane pressure and feed flow rate. AFC 40 proved to be efficient for Atenolol separation with rejection efficiencies of 83% and AFC 80 was perfect for Metformin given a rejection efficiency of 98%. In the end, the Spiegler‒Kedem model (SKM) was used to predict the membrane performance due to its perfect fitting and explain the transport mechanism of the solutes (drugs) through the NF membranes based on irreversible thermodynamics.
