eng SYNTHESIS OF CATIONIC/DICATIONIC CARBORANES Polyhedral boranes and heteroboranes appear almost exclusively as neutral or anionic species, while the cationic ones are protonated at exoskeletal heteroatoms or they are instable. For example, Spokoyny´s group prepared closo-B12(O-3-methylbutyl)12+, which, however decomposes at temperatures above -30 °C.[1] In 2021, we described the first thermally stable cationic carboranes.[2] Here we present the reactivity of 10-vertex closo-carboranes with two equivalents of different N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCDipp, NHCCy, NHCiPr) to 10-vertex nido-bis-carbene adducts. These adducts readily react with HCl or HOTf to 10-vertex nido-type cations with protonation in the form of a BHB bridge or to closo-type cations via dihydrogen elimination. These cationic/dicationic carboranes are air-stable and water-soluble. Their reactivity will be presented as well.
