eng Catalytic aktivity of vanadium-based drier in air-drying paints Currently used cobalt-based driers are becoming unnacceptable for common air-drying paints due to their environmental and health concerns.1 Commercially available alternatives do not provide satisfactory catalytic activity or they become too expensive. One of the promising alternatives involves vanadium based driers. Some of them are already reported in research literature.2 In this study, new vanadium-based driers were prepared from vanadium oxide and dialkyl phosphates in aquenos ethanol. Using X-ray crystallography product appeared as oxidovanadium(IV) phosphate in trimeric structure. EPR spectroscopy proved that this structure is stable in inert solvents. Its catalytic activity in solvent-borne alkyds was measured by B.-K. drying recorder. It showed fast drying of alkyd formulations at concentrations lower than ones used by commercially available driers. The relative hardness of paint coatings was similiar to or even higher than that observed at the optimal dosage of commercial driers. Colorimetric measurements showed that the vanadium-based drier does not influence the coloration of the coatings at low dosage. Tensile strength was recorded on selected alkyds. It showed that paints treated with vanadium-based drier were stiffer and more ductile.
