eng Development of smart self-crosslinking latex binders: effect of embedded nanoparticles of ZnO and MgO on coating properties, This paper deals with a facile fabrication of stable ambient temperature self-crosslinking latex binders containing nanoparticles of ZnO and MgO, respectively. The incorporation of inorganic nanoparticles was performed during the synthesis of a polymer dispersion carried out by a two-stage emulsion polymerization technique. The latex storage stability and coating performance with the emphasis on antibacterial activity evaluation were compared with respect to the type and concentration of incorporated nanoparticles. It was found that latexes containing ZnO and MgO nanoparticles, respectively, exhibited a long-term storage stability and provided crosslinked smooth transparent coating films of high gloss, enhanced solvent resistance and favorable mechanical properties. Moreover, latexes containing ZnO nanoparticles provided bacteriostatic coating films, whereas latexes containing MgO nanoparticles showed a significant decrease in minimum film forming temperature and inhibited flash rust formation pronouncedly. In case of mixing the MgO- and ZnO-containing latexes in the ratio 1/2, the superior qualities of the individual latexes were maintained.
